Pin-A-Duck (2023)
Drawing from my usual style of incorporating fun, kitsch elements to mydesigns, I created a packaging and visual identity which honours the uniqueness and beauty of a vintage duck-shaped pin cushion . The duality between the somewhat organic and ornate form of the object, and its low-poly casing, alludes to notions of deteriorating quality, finite resources and a proposed futuristic aesthetic.
The package is designed both structurally and aesthetically to be reused as storage, display or ornament in a domestic setting. Staying true to the pin-cushion’s original purpose; something I incorporated throughout the design process. The soft, pastel colour palette carries notions of femininity, calm and purity. This material choice was also made based on my research of appropriate packaging paper thickness (as close to 300gsm as possible) andquality, then, filtered by material available, and economic value. The papers I used are FSC Certified as MIX Board C100148. The adhesive I used is polymer based (Scotch 3M Double-Sided Tape), however, I believe that biodegradable and natural gum-based adhesives can be easily sourced and implemented in my design to minimise environmental impact.
